  • A gold medal it is

So Pál won gold in the 1500 freestyle at the Stockholm 2011 World Cup leg, in quite dominant style lapping everyone but Serbian Stefan Sorak. Our younger swimmers found it difficult to swim up to their best times, but the meet was nice and the stay superb. Hopefully coming back next year. Photo: René Thomsen

  • Missed the medals

Small misunderstanding today, resulting in none of the 400 freestyle medalists being ready for the medal ceremony. Called to the scene, they were blocked because there was a medal ceremony taking place. Biedermann somehow got through, the two others had to wait until later for their medals. Looking forward to tomorrow.

  • Another good day in Faroese swimming

Today it is confirmed that a Danish TV crew will join us at the World Cup leg in Stockholm, follow Pál there and then come back with us to the Faroe Islands, to film how he lives and trains in his hometown Vágur. He’s had the competing channel TV2 visit him in Vágur before, but…

  • Moving into the upper echelon

These past few weeks have been quite humbling for us in Faroese swimming, with people acknowledging the little or lot we have managed to do with miniscule resources. Pál was invited to join the Europe team in the “Duel in the Pool” against USA in December, we had 4 young swimmers (and a coach) doing…

  • The Stockholm 2011 World Cup startlist is ready

Exciting stuff, our guy Pál Joensen will be competing against Paul Biedermann in the 400 free, and is the favorite in the 1500. Other interesting names are for instance Geoff Huegill and Eamon Sullivan from Australia, Therese Alshammar and Stefan Nystrand from Sweden, Ingvild Snildal and Alexander Dale Oen from Norway, David Verraszto and Zjuzsanna…

  • A Speedo Goodbye from Shanghai

Keri-Anne Payne says that her goal was to finish in top 10 and qualify for the Olympics, and that the gold medal was just a nice added bonus. Well thanks for that, our guy was no 5 and 4, so that should be OK too :-) Via the17thman.

  • What a fight :-)

0.67 seconds from the bronze medal, 1.87 from the silver, in the 1500 freestyle. Fastest final ever, with Sun Yang setting a world record, and Pál improving his Nordic more than 10 seconds. Kis, you did good, Cochrane, you better train hard until London 2012. Happy times, even though we lost. Hsieh Hsieh Shanghai, Malmö…

  • Woohoo, we’re in the newspaper (!)

Our liaison officer Cora bought us a newspaper this morning, after her parents telling her that there was a story about Pál in it. The headline says “One athlete, big dream”, and they even found a photo showing his signature hand flick. Now, I don’t know exactly how many people read this paper, but since…

  • We’re in the final (again)

An Olympic qualification for a Faroese still living and training on the hard rock islands, that is a first ever. A new Nordic record also, now counting two in two events :-)
