A northern California man’s left hand was partially severed after being struck by an escort boat during the Maui Channel swim last Saturday. There is a call for mandatory propeller guards in the US as in Australia and Singapore, which critics again say slow down a boat’s performance. Read more here on khon2.com.

Acidic swimming pool nearly destroys man’s teeth
It took a bevy of specialists and faculty members at the New York University (NYU) College of Dentistry to unravel the mystery of how a 52-year-old male patient lost nearly all the enamel of his teeth in five months.
He was loosing weight and he’s a very fit individual; he looked like somebody who could be anemic, bulimic, or anorexic because he was very thin and tall. The possibility of eating disorders was discussed, but then the erosion would be on the inner surfaces of the teeth, not the outer surfaces.
Turns out he had started swimming 90 minutes a day over the course of the summer in the pool at his home, which was improperly chlorinated and highly acidic. He got sensitive teeth from it, resulting in him not eating because even the air from breathing would hurt his teeth.

Bodyboarder cut in half by Great White Shark
Grueling story here: The Australian reported that the officer from Dunsborough, on the southwest coast of Western Australia, said “she took some peace from the fact we could say (because of) the nature of his injuries he obviously didn’t suffer for too long”
Her 21-year-old bodyboarding son was bitten in half and instantly killed by a suspected great white shark at the West Australian surf break on Sunday.

Handicapped Swede wins Alcatraz Classic in record time
45-year-old (Paralympic gold medalist) Anders Olsson says that they laughed at him when he came to compete in the 9th Annual Alcatraz Classic: Swim With The Centurions, as the first swimmer ever without functioning legs to enter this grueling competition. But he nevertheless beat them all, swimming 2.6 kilometers (1.5 miles) in the rough and frigid waters of the San Francisco bay, from Alcatraz to the mainland, in record time 24 minutes and 32 seconds. My personal and totally subjective comment: They call it “for experienced open-water swimmers only”, we call it “nothing”. Ahh, it is a good day to be Nordic ;-) Via The Local.
