Yesterday evening, tough as nails Mireira Belmonte GarcÃa won the Szczecin 2011 European Short Course Championships 200 medley and 200 butterfly back-to-back, in 2:07.06 and 2:03.37, respectively. As she did at the Dubai 2010 World Short Course Championships. Wow.

What a great night to be Nordic
Denmark and Norway did well tonight at the Szczecin 2011 European Short Course Championships, with Lotte Friis (DEN) winning the 800 free in a world textile best 8:07.53, Rikke Møller Pedersen (DEN) winning the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.55, Alexander Dale Oen (NOR) taking gold in the 100 breaststroke with a 57.05, Jeanette Ottesen (DEN) taking silver in the 100 freestyle with a 52.05, young Mie Ø. Nielsen (DEN) taking bronze in the 100 backstroke with a new Danish record 57.57, Jeanette Ottesen (DEN) winning the 50 butterfly in a new championship record of 24.92, and Denmark taking silver in the 4×50 freestyle with a 1:37.63. Danish national coach Paulus Wildeboer can be really proud of his own son as well, who trains in Denmark, Aschwin Wildeboer Faber (ESP) taking gold in the 50 backstroke with a 23.43. So with all these great results especially out of Denmark, let’s pay homage to the main man behind them, coach Wildeboer!
Add to this that Mads Glæsner (DEN) won a silver medal in the 400 freestyle with a 3:39.30, yesterday evening, and Aschwin Wildeboer Faber (ESP) a silver medal in the 200 backstroke with a 1:50.63, and you’ll see that there is something special going on in the state of Denmark these days :-)

Imagine swimming 20K in this pressure cooker
Since this is Pál’s day off before the 1500 tomorrow, he spends part of it training aerobically, so that he’ll be able to swim fast also at the Duel in the Pool in Atlanta next weekend. 20K today, I heard his coach say, and we don’t bother finding another pool to train in. Pál himself grumbled a moment ago that it took him 1 hour 15 minutes to swim just 4500 meters. But at least we’re sure that it won’t be anaerobic ! :-)

Stibergs arrival to Szczecin delayed because the pilots overslept
She did okay today, Norway’s Katharina Stiberg, first qualifying this morning for the 50 breaststroke Szczecin 2011 semi-final in 31.13, and then this afternoon for the final in 30.94, before ending up fourth in the final with a 30.80. But hey, when she was supposed to leave Evenes in Norway, yesterday morning, it turned out that the pilots had overslept, making her miss the connected flight to Szczecin. So she had to find a new flight to Berlin rather than Szczecin, and take a bus from there to Szczecin, arriving here at the hotel yesterday evening, after a 15 hour trip. Nice. Via www.simma.nu/no
