Diving Into a New Chapter: Publishing Expert Jack Hallahan and Hasty Awards President Steve Hasty Lead Swimming World’s Resurgence, Paving the Way for a Dynamic Future in Aquatic Sports Journalism
New Owners Are Breathing New Life into the Longest Running Magazine About Aquatic Sports with a 76-Page Issue — the Outlet’s First Print Issue of Since 2022 — Unleashing the Next Era of Swimming World
SAN FRANCISCO — February 13, 2024 — Swimming World, the go-to source for the sport of swimming and longest-running publication on aquatic sports, today announces that new ownership has acquired the company. Jack Hallahan, an advertising and publishing expert, and Steve Hasty, President and Owner of the Hasty Awards, together have taken over the outlet and its publication to return the magazine to physical print and strengthen its status as the ultimate outlet for impartial news and expert commentary for the swimming and aquatic sports community.
“Swimming World is too important to the sport not to provide this vaunted title an opportunity to thrive and be re-imagined for a new generation of aquatic athletes, parents, and coaches,” said Jack Hallahan, Co-owner and Publisher of Swimming World. “This magazine was once heralded as the bible of swimming and we have a vision to make it top of mind and your go-to source again. The product itself has always remained top notch, but the marketing and user experience must adapt to the modern era. Given that it’s an Olympic year, it’s only right we come back to print with one of our largest issues ever released. We intend to let everyone know that Swimming World is still that same powerful voice you have come to trust for decades and we will prove that with a sense of authenticity.”
To kick things off under its new leadership, Swimming World has released its first physical issue since 2022 with an unprecedented 76-page issue with special binding. Additionally, the magazine aims to bring in younger generations to its readership by diversifying its content and launching a proper marketing strategy. With the 2024 Paris Olympic Games a few months away, Swimming World will have reporters on the grounds of every elite-level competition leading up to the Games in order to spotlight the efforts of teams and athletes looking to make a splash this summer.
“The truth is, when it comes to our journalism and reporting, we don’t have to change up much,” said Steve Hasty, Co-owner of Swimming World. “Coverage of the competition scene has always been one of the strongest aspects of Swimming World. However, swimming as a sport encapsulates so much more. Swimming is a lifestyle, a meditative experience that resonates with so many enthusiasts across the globe. While we will always heavily focus on the competitive landscape, we want to capture content that goes beyond that in order to bring in those who simply swim to improve their everyday life.”
Swimming World’s editor-in-chief, John Lohn, shares a similar sentiment. After being with the magazine for over 20 years, Lohn has high hopes for the future of the outlet under its new leaders.
“We’ve always covered the sport with journalistic integrity,” Lohn said. “We give a little something for everybody. While every Olympiad will give us the chance to prove that we are unrivaled when it comes to our reporting on the sport, we are also focusing on developing content that meets the need for the average swimmer who wakes up at 6 am every morning to get their laps in before work. That’s just as important to us as profiling the next gold medalist”
