5 Handy And Helpful Tips For Cleaning Your Swimming Pool!

You’ve got your swimsuit. You’ve got your pool. You’re ready to jump in. But you can’t. There’s junk everywhere. Just like any top-notch car or computer, your swimming pool also requires constant upkeep to keep it in tip-top shape. Keeping your pool clean and sparkling is a constant process. Just keep in mind the fundamentals of all pool care: The three Cs. Cleaning, chemistry, and circulation.

Watching junk float by in your pool isn’t a happy moment. But you can get a move on and fix this. You’re probably familiar with the basics of pool cleaning like every pool owner now.

Skimming, vacuuming, checking the chemical levels, and checking the filters might all be second nature to you now. But you’ve only skimmed the surface of everything pool maintenance has to offer.

Let’s look at some handy and helpful tips for keeping your pool sparkling clean.

1. Level up your pool equipment.

Unless you want your pool to be invaded by algae, pull out your skimmer basket and a pair of stockings. Also, some tennis balls.

Wrap the stockings around the skimmer basket and toss a golf ball inside another skimmer. Shove them inside.

You now have a superior pair of tools you’ll never do without ever again. Use the stocking-augmented skimmer basket and scoop out the junk in your pool. The tiny holes in the mesh of the fabric can capture even the smallest particles of dirt and junk.

As for the tennis ball, it has a unique texture that makes it ideal for absorbing all kinds of oil from its surroundings. Toss the golf ball skimmers into the pool and watch them suck up the gross oils in the pool like body oil, grime, hair products, cosmetics, sunscreen, sweat, and remove them with ease.

Just let it float around for a while and suck up as much oil as it can.

The stocking skimmer can pick up the remaining debris. Both of these tools are indispensable and you’ll wonder how you ever did without them.

2. Add a dose of flocculant.

What do you do when there’re tons of little particles of dirt that even the powered up skimmer can’t handle?

Well, you use a flocculant. This chemical removes suspended solids in liquids by transforming them into flakes. The flakes stick together and catch things like calcium, iron, and copper in the pool.

These chemicals can make your pool turn a terrible-looking muddy brown and are easily compacted together with flocculant.

Stuff the flocculant in the skimmers and start waving them around. The natural filtration of the skimmer will ensure the product is distributed all through the water and combines all the debris into a clump.

And there you have it. The pantyhose skimmer picks up fine dust, and the flocculant will let you pick up even finer dust.

This will make your pool turn sparkling blue in no time.

3. Give the pool walls a good scrub.

Dirt builds up in the walls and forms a sickly looking soapy scum. This scum needs to be removed immediately before it gives rise to life like algae.

Always remember to use soft brushes for fibreglass pools and get a tile brush, and a nonabrasive chlorine-based liquid ready.

Little dirt particles stick to the walls that can be impossible to get rid of. Start the pool pump and begin brushing the steps and walls of the pool with force. The pump will ensure the particles don’t get a chance to simply float up and settle on the surface of the water ever gain.

You can catch the smaller particles with ease and clean all soapy scum from the sidewalls and steps.

Use a scouring pad and pumice stone to address the pool walls. They work like giant erasers and are super effective.

While you give the walls a good scrub, notice the quality of your pool water. This is an ideal time to check for cracks and signs of degradation around the pool. If your pool filters aren’t working, you should be able to tell with the cleanliness of your pool walls.

4. Eliminate bugs and mosquitoes

Just like people, mosquitoes also love the water when the weather gets hot. What’s a better source of moisture than a swimming pool?

Scooping up dead bugs on the surface on your pool water is terrible. You can bypass all the trouble of these buzzing troublemakers if you simply keep a lemongrass plant near the pool. The citronella in the plant’s skin contains natural components that ward off mosquitoes and other irritating little bugs. Insects don’t like building nests near a lemongrass plant and will stay far away.

Whether its water boatmen, backswimmers, or the springtail, bugs around the pool are a serious mood killer.

Use a pool cover to ward off the worst of them and eliminate standing water near your pool to quickly remove any bug attractants.

A simple bug zapper near a pool acts as the perfect bait for any buzzkills nearby. Turn off any lights near your pools and watch the zapper clean house without you lifting a finger.

5. Let an automatic pool cover do all the work.

The simplest path to a clean pool is never getting it dirty in the first place. An automatic pool cover might just be the single best investment you make. The pool cover keeps sunlight out and maintains the effectiveness of chlorine in the water. It maintains a fairly constant temperature in the pool and prevents algae growth as a result.

When its on, it prevents people from drowning and preserves your pool’s water levels against evaporation as well. Big and small clumps of debris and junk can’t litter your pool anymore. All it takes is the simple press of a button to keep your pool sparkling clean.

And the cherry on top? All the hours saved that would be otherwise spent on cleaning. Now you can jump in without hesitation.
