Knowing the Safety and Planning Laws for Brisbane

Each state and territory in Australia have swimming pool laws and legislations in place, however they vary depending on which state you live in. This is what you need to know about Brisbanes pool safety and planning laws.

Before any work starts, it needs to be approved for construction by your local council. What’s involved?

Depending on your site you may need to apply for a:

  1. Building permit
  2. Sewerage and water supply approval
  3. Structural Stability approval

In most cases, your pool builder will do this on your behalf and the process is straightforward. Once your approvals have been granted your pool can be built. All residential swimming pools in Queensland must be registered with QBCC (Queensland Building and Construction Commission). Failing to comply can lead to a fine being issued. Additionally, you should check with them that the pool builder you are hiring is licenced. Your pool builder will write up a domestic contract and you should read this thoroughly to ensure you agree to the terms stated before signing. If you agree with the terms outlined, you and the pool builder will then sign the contract and it will be legally binding. No construction can commence until this is done. All swimming pools with a depth of more than 30mm or can hold a capacity of 2000 litres must be enclosed with a compliant pool barrier and it must meet state government pool safety legislation under chapter 8 of the Building Act 1975. It is your responsibility as a pool owner to ensure that your barrier is maintained and there are no objects near the pool that could be used by a child to gain access to the pool. Your pool fencing will be inspected by the council to ensure it is compliant. If you would like further information on Brisbane’s pool laws and regulations, visit the Queensland Building and Construction Commission website https://www.qbcc.qld.gov.au/sites/default/files/Swimming%20Pools.pdf or the Brisbane City Council website at https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/planning-and-building/do-i-need-approval/residential-projects/yards-pools-fences-and-landscaping/fences/swimming-pool-fencing-and-safety-regulations#3.

Which fibreglass pool is best suited to me in Brisbane?

More and more people are choosing fibreglass pools over other types as they are quick to install and easy to maintain. The interior surface is impermeable which makes it virtually resistant to algae and bacteria growth. But with so many options which one is best suited to you? It’s hard to give a definitive answer on this question as everyone has different reasons for wanting a pool for their home so what may be a great choice for someone else may not suit your swimming needs or home best. When deciding on a pool for your home in Brisbane, you should consider a few things to help you make your choice. The first thing is the space you have to work with as this will determine how big you can have your pool. Secondly, you should consider what your primary motive is for purchasing a pool. Are you buying it for the kids? To work on your fitness? Relaxation? Etc. This can help you narrow down your choices and determine which additional extras you would like to include in your pool to enhance the swimming experience. Lastly and somewhat most importantly for some is your budget. You need to establish how much you can spend to work which pool types can accommodate that. For the most part, people residing in inner-city Brisbane are limited on space and you will mostly find smaller pool types such as our spas, swim spas, plunge pools and lap pools. If you head out to the suburban areas, they tend to have a bit more room and there are a higher number of large pools here such as our Monaco, Billabong, Venice, and Brampton styles. Our experienced team can sit down with you to run through which pools are best suited to you based on the factors mentioned above.

Can I use my pool all year round with Brisbane’s weather?

Brisbane experiences arguably some of the nicest weather in the country. With winter days averaging 22 degrees, it doesn’t get unbearably cold like some other parts of Australia. While it is nice weather to be out and about, for some it is too cold for swimming. There is a simple solution that enables you to use your pool year-round and that is heating, and it may not be as expensive as you think. There are many cost-effective options today that heat your pool for less.

Our swimming pools here at Fibreglass Pools Brisbane hold the prestigious SAI Global Australian Standards 5 Tick Certified Product Certification and surpass the worldwide standard for thickness.

The locals of Brisbane trust and recognise us for delivering stunning pools that are personalised to the individual. If you have any questions or would like further information, get in touch with our friendly team.
