Dr. Lisa Casey of New Orleans was one of the furthest people out in a human chain that formed Saturday in an attempt to save two swimmers in distress. Video NBC 15 News obtained shows waves overtaking the chain and breaking it apart.
“I thought it was going to be a quick, go grab them and bring them back in. But that’s not what happened,” said Casey.
Ultimately, the human chain caused even more people to get caught up in deadly rip currents and rough surf. Karen Graham, a 54-year-old wife and mother of two, didn’t survive. Graham, her family says, had been the first one in the human chain, trying to save the swimmers who were in trouble.
