The Importance of Deep Water Competence in Learning to Swim

What is the meaning of, “I Can Swim?”In your heart of hearts, you know: if you’re not competent in water over your head, you have not quite learned to swim yet. Learning to swim is not learning strokes. First learn to swim: become confident and safe in deep water. Then, learn to swim efficiently: by learning strokes. This presentation was given to the National Water Safety Conference, put on by the U.S.’s National Drowning Prevention Alliance, April 2020, online.
