Tragic death leads to small town Olympic swimming pool | The Pool

After the tragic drowning of a 12-year-old girl in a local swimming hole in the early 1950s, the town of Portland decided to act.

The local cement works donated a parcel of land and a huge supply of equipment to quickly construct a local swimming pool to ensure families had a safe place to swim.

After six decades in operation, the Portland Olympic Pool remains a huge source of pride for the town’s citizens.
