Migrant drowns trying to ‘swim to England’ wearing plastic bottles to keep him afloat

An Iraqi migrant has drowned trying to swim to England wearing an improvised buoyancy aid made of plastic bottles.

The unnamed man’s body was found at a wind farm off the coast of Zeebrugge in Belgium.

He was identified using fingerprints and officials said they thought he had been refused asylum in Germany.

West Flanders’ governor Carl Decaluwé added: ‘We think he was going to try to swim to the UK.

‘I think he was starting in France.’
