Two men drown trying to rescue swimmer who was saved by police

Authorities say two swimmers drowned while trying to rescue another man who was saved by police.

The men were all swimming in the Thornes Creek in Hazlet, N.J., when one of them started yelling for help around 2:40 p.m. Sunday. The two other men went to help the man who was struggling but they soon went under water and didn’t surface.

Police responding to the scene soon found the swimmer who had been in distress. He was located near the water’s edge and was taken to a hospital, but further information on his condition was not disclosed.

The bodies of the two other swimmers were found later Sunday. Their names have not been released.
