High-surf and rough conditions forced organizers to cancel the annual Waikiki Roughwater Swim in Waikiki Saturday, less than an hour before it was to start.
The event draws swimmers from Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Japan, including a few Olympic medalists and world champions.
Event organizers had been keeping a close eye on the weather all week and had to make the tough call.
“So, we feel horrible having people come all this way and have to not have the race, but it would’ve been very unsafe too to do today,†said event director Kaia Hedlund.
