The parents of a 10-year-old girl are facing charges in a Bloemfontein court for apparently forcing her to practise sport extensively, the Volksblad newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The mother of the girl was warned that she could face up to 10 years in prison for the charges she faced, the newspaper reported.

The 38-year-old woman and her husband, 31, appeared in the Bloemfontein Regional Court on charges of attempted murder and child neglect on Monday. […]

The attempted murder charge relates to an incident in October last year when the girl had to swim continuously in the Krugerdriftdam, outside Bloemfontein, while her parents were watching from the side.

The report said when the girl was tired of swimming, she was apparently assaulted and forced to swim again.

There is no difference between then and now expect the fact that you have become bigger, better and faster. You should never push yourself so hard to achieve a goal that you start to hate the sport. Once you’ve pushed yourself so hard to reach that goal that you have gotten to the brink of quitting the sport then there is no more fun in chasing that goal. You achieve your goal and their is no sense of pride, rather their is a sense of relief. It should not be this way. Then you of course get these over obsessive parents that try and live their dream through their children. I cannot tell you how much this irritates me. Recently a 10-year old girl drowned and died after her parents repeatedly forced her to swim.
