Phillips lost the ring in two weeks after he got it back in ’74, when it got caught in the pop top of a beer can he tried to open on a boating trip with his future wife. He was also currently in the hospital recovering from brain surgery, and battling cancer when Tovin found him to return it (even getting down on one knee with a jewelry box to do so).
