An Irish distance swimmer had to abandon a historic attempt to swim from Ireland to Wales after he began to show signs of hypothermia.

Steve Redmond (47) was advised by his support team to quit the 80km swim five hours after he left Wexford in an attempt to make the crossing to St David’s.

The west Cork swimmer, who last year won the Seven Oceans Challenge by swimming the most difficult sea channels on the planet, was today said to be “very disappointed” by the decision.
