Two Bay Area swimmers are celebrated an official world record Tuesday morning after swimming from Alcatraz to San Francisco for the 1,000th time.

Open water swimmers Gary Emich and Steven Hurwitz arrived at Aquatic Park only 40 minutes after leaving The Rock. It was a record for both men who are members of the South End Rowing Club.

Tuesday’s swim was a fundraiser for Hospice by the Bay, South End Rowing Club and the Bay Keeper Foundation.
