Hackett still setting the gold standard via coach Cotterell’s tales

Read The Age

Grant Hackett might be long gone from the competitive pool, having retired in 2008 after narrowly failing to become the first male swimmer to win three Olympic golds in the same event.

But the 1500 metres freestyle champion’s former coach Denis Cotterell has ensured Hackett’s legacy is not forgotten by his present crop of swimmers, who are regaled with comparisons to the pool legend to keep them sharp.

Young gun Jordan Harrison:

”I guess always being with Denis and seeing what Grant did under [him], it’s inspired me,” Harrison said. ”Denis refers to him probably nearly every session. He uses Grant’s efforts as motivation.

”He tells us ‘if you want to be as good as Grant you’ve got to go these times’. He knows what Grant did so to have his coach directly telling you what he did, telling you what sets he did, it’s awesome.
