23-year-old Mateusz Matcak from Poland is currently in a coma after suffering serious head injuries following a fall while drunk. He won gold in the 400 freestyle and 400 IM at the European Junior Championships in Antwerp 2007, and a silver in the 200 IM, and was due to fight for a place in the Polish Olympic team next month, until he recently withdrew without offering any explanation. Currently in a medically induced coma for a further two or three days, doctors at the hospital have played down reports that the swimmer was attacked: “From what we have seen, it’s very likely that the patient was not beaten up, but just hit by a car.” Read Thenews.pl
